What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual property refers to creativity of the human mind i.e. inventions, literary and artistic work, symbols, logos, names and images used in commerce and are worthy of legal protection. Intellectual property is divided into two categories: Industrial property, which includes on one hand, inventions (patents), trademarks, industrial designs drawings and prototypes, and geographic indications of origin, and on the other hand copyrights which include literary and artistic work (such as novels, poems, plays, films, musical compositions, and work of art including pictures, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and architectural drawings). Other rights related to copyrights include those of performing artists in respect of their performance, rights of producers of phonograms in respect of their recordings, and rights of broadcasting institutions related to their radio and television programs.
